Andreasian on the Conservatory Issue
The Minister of Education, Culture and Sports of Armenia, Zhanna Andreasian, has commented on the possibility of separating the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory from the university unification program.
"The program to operate under a single umbrella with universities and research organizations is a legal requirement, because the 'State Program for the Development of Education until 2030' has been approved by the National Assembly of Armenia, which outlines our target regarding how many universities we should have with state funding. Discussions should take place within this framework," Andreasian said while responding to journalists' questions after a government meeting.
According to her, the Ministry of Education and Science made a statement in July 2023 clearly stating that discussions will begin regarding the consolidation of universities and the unification of research organizations as part of the educational development program by 2030.
Last year, the Ministry proposed that universities and institutions submit their proposals by February 15 of this year, detailing their observations and insights.
The minister noted that working groups have been formed in every direction to thoroughly discuss both pro and con viewpoints, justifications, and arguments. "The first discussion of the working group in the arts sector has taken place. Representatives of the conservatory were also included in the discussions. This is a very complex and multilayered process; it is clear that many factors need to be considered. We are eager to hear all opinions. I am glad that our students and faculty are actively involved. We have a lot to discuss together," she said.
Earlier, we reported that a petition was being circulated at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory. The faculty and students are opposed to the idea of the conservatory becoming part of an academic city or merging with another university.
