Tense Situation in Nor Nork: Clash Between Residents and Police Erupts

Edita

The tense situation continues in the Nor Nork administrative district of Yerevan, near the beginning of Gayi Street. Residents of eight illegally built residential houses located between Tatul Krpeyan Park and the Valencia restaurant complex are protesting against the city hall's decision to demolish their homes.

At this moment, a scuffle has erupted between the protesters and the police. In conversations with reporters, the residents stated that they have long approached the city hall to legalize their houses, but have received no response.

According to them, the Yerevan City Hall is demolishing their houses not to green the area, but to construct new buildings. Members of the “National Progress” and “Mother Armenia” parliamentary groups have also joined the protesters. They are demanding the relevant documentation to understand the basis for the ongoing works, but those conducting the demolition are not providing any documents.

Currently, trees in the area are being uprooted. Tigran Ter-Margaryan, the head of the Nor Nork administrative district, told reporters that he did not make the decision to begin demolition works; that was done by the Yerevan City Hall. “This is not a green area; there are trees, but it is not landscaped. Residents have repeatedly approached me to privatize those houses, but I have said that there is no option for privatization,” he said.

It is worth recalling that earlier, the spokesperson for the Mayor of Yerevan, Hayk Kostanyan, wrote that several addresses on Lvovyan Street in the Nor Nork administrative district have illegal constructions built on public green areas that are communal property, burdening the communal property land.
