"It is clear that they are not fulfilling their obligations": Alen Simonian

"It is obvious to us that this security system is not functioning," said National Assembly President Alen Simonian, commenting on Armenia's membership in the CSTO.

"What more needs to happen for us to understand that this security system does not work, with various justifications? You did this, we did that, we were busy in Ukraine, you called, we didn’t manage to answer the phone. Look at what happened in Artsakh, the situation of the peacekeepers, look at what took place in Khtsaberd, look at Hine Tagher, look at what occurred at Sevan Lake, and Jermuk, the captives, let’s see what happened. Our resources—human, political, state—are not unlimited. Let’s look at what happened with the Lachin Corridor. Which example should I provide?" he stated.

When asked whether an alternative security arrangement has been created, he noted, "According to Armenia, the security alternative is to use all possible means, as well as make a desperate attempt to somehow revive the CSTO."

He said they are trying to purchase weapons from various locations to defend the state: "If this somehow disrupts a security system, that is their problem. But it is evident that they are not fulfilling their obligations."

He also mentioned that Armenia is prepared to strengthen relations with the EU: "We will be moving in the direction that ensures our greater security. Today, democracy is our greatest security system."
