Editor of Novaya Gazeta Arrested in Moscow: Cause Revealed
The editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, Sergey Sokolov, has been taken by employees of the 'E' Center to the police station for drafting an administrative protocol under the article of 'discrediting' the Russian army, reports the publication. The case relates to one of Novaya Gazeta's publications, although the specific publication is not mentioned.
The investigation of the administrative case will take place at the Perovsky District Court in Moscow, Sokolov's colleagues clarified.
Sokolov has replaced Dmitry Muratov as the chief editor of Novaya Gazeta following recent rotations in the editorial staff. Muratov, a Nobel laureate, continues to work with the publication.
Sokolov has been with Novaya Gazeta since the 1990s and is one of the founders of the publication. After the outbreak of war, the editorial team of Novaya Gazeta split into two parts: some journalists remained in Russia to continue working, while others moved abroad and established Novaya Gazeta Europe, which has been declared an undesirable organization by Russian authorities. The Russian editorial team is forced to operate under the constraints imposed by military censorship.
