Kopirkin on Armenian-Russian Relations and Peace Agreement

Russia is ready to provide maximum possible assistance to achieve peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This was stated by Sergey Kopirkin, the Russian Ambassador to Armenia, in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“The Russian side has been working very actively, persistently, and consistently on this matter. This is confirmed by our actions, and I won’t even list what has been done with the participation and initiative of the Russian side in this regard. I want to say that Russia is steadfastly committed to providing maximum possible assistance in this process, aiming to achieve a truly stable and just peace settlement between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” said Kopirkin.

According to him, Moscow is interested in stable peace in the region. “We support the process of normalizing relations, and Russia has always emphasized its readiness to work in all aspects of this direction—whether it pertains to signing a peace agreement, delimitation, or demarcation of borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan, developing confidence-building measures, including interactions through civil society, or opening communications,” the ambassador stated.

He added that relevant tripartite structures have been created in which Russia actively participates. “I repeat, Russia is steadfastly committed to providing maximum necessary assistance in this process. Of course, this is a decision for the parties, it is their sovereign issue. But, I reiterate, Russia has been committed, remains committed, and will continue to work actively in this direction. This issue is vital for us. The South Caucasus is a region very important to us, and it is in our vital interest for the region to be peaceful, stable, and prosperous,” Kopirkin emphasized.

During the interview, Kopirkin also noted that the strategic interests of the Russian Federation and Armenia coincide, and the relationship between the two countries continues to be of a allied nature. “I base my statement on the fact that our relations continue to have an allied character. You know, there are many historical ties that bind us. It is unnecessary to mention what has connected our peoples throughout the long history,” he said.

According to him, apart from that, the countries currently have a very broad practical agenda regarding key aspects of the lives of states and people. “I am confident that this provides a solid foundation that endows our relations with resilience. I am also convinced that in the main parameters, our strategic interests also objectively coincide, as both ancient and contemporary history has proven. Therefore, I believe it is entirely accurate for the Russian side to clearly state that our relations, despite all the challenges, certain misunderstandings, and attempts by external players to create divisions between us based on their opportunistic geopolitical interests, maintain their allied, strategic nature,” Kopirkin noted.
