Death Toll from Earthquake in Japan Reaches 180
In the vicinity of the Noto Peninsula, along the coast of the Sea of Japan, the bodies of an additional 20 victims have been discovered following powerful earthquakes. This brings the total death toll to 180, according to NHK, citing data from the Ishikawa Prefecture authorities.
The number of injured has reached 565, with 120 people still considered missing. A total of 28,000 residents have been evacuated. The Ishikawa Prefecture has been the hardest hit, where 1,370 homes have been completely or partially destroyed.
Local residents are without drinking water, resorting to boiling water from springs and rivers. The Japanese government plans to provide $32 million in aid to those affected.
Since January 1, over 1,200 earthquakes have been recorded in Japan. The strongest among them registered a magnitude of 7.6, marking the most powerful earthquake in the region since records began in 1885. Seismologists predict that aftershocks will continue for another week.
