Nearly 250 Missing: Aftermath of Japan's Earthquake

Nearly 250 people have gone missing following the earthquake in Japan, and hopes of finding survivors are dwindling. This was reported by the Russian service of the BBC.

The 72-hour "window of opportunity" during which there was a significant chance of finding survivors trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings ended on Thursday evening. On Monday, January 1, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the western Noto Peninsula in Japan.

By Friday, the death toll had reached 92. Japan's Self-Defense Forces have doubled the number of personnel involved in the rescue operations, now totaling 4,600, according to the Kyodo news agency. Rescuers believe that many people remain trapped beneath collapsed homes, predominantly in the cities of Suzu and Wajima.
