Record Cold in St. Petersburg Since 1950

On the morning of January 4, the temperature in St. Petersburg dropped to minus 25.3 degrees Celsius. This sets a new record in the city, surpassing the previous record of minus 25.1 degrees set in 1950. This was reported on Telegram by the city’s chief meteorologist Alexander Kolesov.

In the eastern and southern districts of the city, temperatures reached minus 27 to minus 28 degrees. Meanwhile, in the northeastern region of Leningrad Oblast, the mercury fell to minus 36 degrees.

Kolesov added that with the arrival of a cyclone, the temperature in St. Petersburg will likely rise to minus 15 to minus 20 degrees Celsius on the night of January 5-6. However, city residents should not expect a sudden warming, as the average daily temperature is expected to remain at very low levels in the coming days. At the same time, frostbite incidents will be accompanied by light snowfall.
