Man Attempted to Murder Ex-Wife with Axe, Previously Convicted Nine Times

On January 2, 2024, a 40-year-old resident of Vanadzor reported to the police that on the same day, she had argued with her ex-husband over domestic issues in their home. Following the argument, he struck her multiple times with an axe, as well as with his hands and feet. This information has been provided by the Investigative Committee of Armenia.

Following the incident, an examination of the crime scene was conducted by the Regional Investigative Department of Lori, where the axe, identified as the instrument of the alleged crime, was discovered and seized. The woman has been recognized as the victim.

Preliminary data from the investigation revealed that her ex-husband, a 43-year-old man with nine prior convictions, argued with his ex-wife under the influence of alcohol around 3 PM on January 2. He then retrieved an axe from the bedroom and hit her first in the chest and subsequently struck her head, hands, and legs, inflicting injuries diagnosed as a torn wound on the right side of the chest and cranial trauma.

The crime was interrupted as the Vanadzor woman managed to escape, while her daughter called for help from neighbors. As a result of immediate investigative actions and operational measures, the 43-year-old man was arrested on the same day at 3:57 PM on suspicion of having committed the crime.

Based on the factual data obtained during the preliminary investigation, a request was submitted to the supervising prosecutor to initiate public criminal prosecution against him, which was granted. The man has been charged under Article 44-155, Part 2, Point 9 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia (attempted murder by a close relative). A motion has been filed with the court seeking detention as a preventive measure against the man. The investigation is ongoing.
