Latvia's Postal Service Begins Opening Letters Destined for Russia and Belarus
Lilit A.
Latvia's postal service has started opening and reading letters addressed to Russia and Belarus. According to Delfi, the incident came to light when a man sent a postcard to his girlfriend in Moscow, only for her to discover that the letter had been opened by Latvian postal employees, as indicated by a corresponding sticker.
The company’s management explained this policy in light of EU sanctions imposed on these countries. Specifically, postal department representative Matis Rutks stated that letters and packages are being opened in search of money, bank and SIM cards, as well as chips.
