Even After the Exchange of Prisoners, Armenian Detainees Will Remain in That Country: Simonian
The Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, Alen Simonian, received the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Canada to Armenia, Andrew Turner, today.
Simonian expressed confidence that the opening of the Canadian embassy in Armenia and Andrew Turner's appointment as the first resident ambassador will serve as a new impetus for the development of relations between the two countries.
The Speaker also addressed regional challenges. "We understand that our key security system is democracy. We are hopeful that international partners will support democratic Armenia in establishing lasting peace in the region," he said.
Simonian presented the ambassador with the process of signing a peace agreement with Azerbaijan and discussed the urgent return of detainees held in Azerbaijan. According to him, even after the implementation of the agreement on the exchange of detainees between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Armenian detainees will remain in that country.
The ambassador noted that Canada supports Armenia's territorial integrity, sovereignty, and democracy.
