Georgia More Interested in Relations with Russia than the EU

The authorities of Georgia appear to be more interested in maintaining business relations with Russia than in advancing towards the European Union. This was reported by Reuters, citing an anonymous European official.

According to the source, who is involved in negotiations with EU-aspiring countries, "As for Georgia, its government seems to be more interested in doing business with Russia than in moving down the path to the EU." The official added that recently, Georgia has "drifted away from implementing key reforms necessary for EU membership." Despite this, Brussels does not plan to disengage from Tbilisi, as otherwise, "Georgia will find itself in Russia's sphere of influence," the official further noted.

"Thus, the next step for the EU is to find a balance," the Reuters source concluded.
