Video: Red Berets Encircle Alaverdi Municipality as New Mayor to Be Sworn In

Mariam Z.

The Alaverdi municipality is currently surrounded by a significant number of police forces and red berets. Today, a council session is scheduled at the municipality where Davit Ghumashyan, elected mayor from the ruling party, will take the oath of office.

It is worth recalling that the Alaverdi council expressed no confidence in the mayor Arkadi Tamazyan, a member of the 'Living Land' party, with a vote of 14 in favor. In the same session, they elected Davit Ghumashyan, a member of the council from the ruling party, as the new community leader.

Out of the 27 mandates in the council, 13 were allocated to the ruling party, 13 to 'Living Land', and one to the Armenian National Congress (ANC). 'Living Land' and the ANC formed a coalition, which allowed Arkadi Tamazyan to become mayor with 14 votes. However, Simon Zakharov, a member of the 'Living Land' faction, left the faction and became an independent member, supporting the ruling party. This enabled them to express no confidence in the sitting mayor with 14 votes.

Yesterday, Arkadi Tamazyan issued a statement noting that his team has filed a lawsuit claiming that the seizure of the mayor's office is illegal and violent. 'We will continue to fight through all political means to restore justice,' Tamazyan wrote.
