Citizenship for Ethnic Armenians from Former USSR Countries to Be Available Until 2026
The deadline for obtaining Armenian citizenship for ethnic Armenians from former USSR countries may be extended. This was stated by Armen Ghazaryan, head of the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia, during a discussion on the amendments and changes to the "Law on Armenian Citizenship" at the sitting of the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security.
Currently, there are temporal limitations in the article of the law regarding the recognition of citizenship. The process for recognizing ethnic Armenians from former USSR countries was originally scheduled to end on December 31, 2023. However, the practice shows that there are still cases where several individuals are applying to the Migration and Citizenship Service to be recognized as citizens of Armenia and to obtain identification documents. Therefore, we propose to extend the deadlines by three years, until 2026, Ghazaryan emphasized.
The bill, along with the proposed amendments, was included in the agenda for plenary sessions on a 24-hour schedule.
