Over 32,000 Names of Fallen Russian Soldiers Identified in Ukraine War

The BBC, in collaboration with the publication Mediazona and a group of volunteers, has been able to identify the names of 32,164 Russian soldiers who have died in the ongoing war in Ukraine based on open-source information, reports the Russian service of the outlet.

It is noted that at least 1,910 of them were killed while repelling the Ukrainian Armed Forces' counteroffensive. Meanwhile, the media outlet states that this list likely contains only about half the number of actual losses buried in Russia.

"We have reached this conclusion by comparing the number of public obituaries with the number of military graves in cemeteries across 70 locations in Russia," the media outlet mentions.

The largest category of losses remains prisoners. The names of 6,073 deceased convicts are known, the majority of whom fought as part of the Wagner PMC. However, more information is being gathered regarding the losses of prisoner units “Storm,” organized by Russia's Ministry of Defense.

The second largest group in terms of casualties are the mobilized troops, with 3,613 reported deaths. It is also reported that the officer corps continues to sustain significant losses, with the number of confirmed casualties among officers having risen to 40.
