What to Expect from the UN Security Council Emergency Session: Details

The daily newspaper "Zhoghovurd" reports: "An emergency meeting of the UN Security Council took place yesterday. Following this meeting, it has become relevant and of interest to many to know what will happen after this discussion.

Thus, the newspaper "Zhoghovurd" has clarified by examining the UN Charter that there could be several scenarios. The Security Council can adopt a statement. A resolution is adopted if nine members vote in favor during an open session. Among these members must be the five permanent members. If any of the permanent members object, the resolution is not adopted.

There could be a Presidential statement, which must be accepted by consensus. Another option is the President’s letter—either a letter from the President or a press statement.

It is worth noting that on December 20, 2022, an extraordinary meeting was held under the presidency of India, which was again called based on Armenia's request to discuss the situation created by the blockade of the Lachin corridor. However, after this discussion, the parties did not reach consensus, and a statement was not adopted. The statement was initiated by France, but it was not accepted due to objections from the Russian side. It will be interesting to see what happens this time.

Furthermore, the Security Council is one of the main bodies of the United Nations, consisting of 15 members, five of whom are permanent members representing the USA, Russia, Great Britain, France, and China, and have veto power."
