Protests Against Erdogan in Turkey: The Cause Revealed
Residents of Şanlıurfa, Turkey have taken to the streets to protest President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's migration policy that has brought millions of migrants to the country.
The protests began after a Syrian migrant raped a 5-year-old Turkish boy in the Bozova district of Şanlıurfa, as reported by EADaily.
"Government, resign! Tayyip, resign!" chanted the protesters. The fact is that the number of migrants in Turkey exceeds 6 million, the majority of whom are Syrians, Iraqis, and Afghans.
The increase in migration flows, particularly from Syria, is largely attributed to Ankara's policies, which have played a destabilizing role in the context of the Syrian crisis. Turkey supports the armed opposition in Syria and has de facto occupied territories in the northwestern part of this Arab republic.
The issue of migrants became one of the key points of accusation against Erdoğan during the recent presidential elections.
Several experts and organizations also point out the growing "Arabophobia" within Turkish society, particularly among nationalists.
