Ukraine Not Invited to G20 Summit, Says Indian Prime Minister
Ukraine has not been invited to the G20 summit, which will take place on September 9-10 in New Delhi, as the group is focused on economic development issues, while security matters are to be addressed by the UN Security Council. This was stated by India's Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, according to TASS.
“The G20 addresses global growth and economic development issues. The summit will discuss energy, fertilizer, and food supply challenges,” he said during a press conference in New Delhi, responding to a question about why Ukraine was not included in the list of invited countries.
Jaishankar emphasized that the G20 does not deal with global security issues, and that the platform for such topics is the UN Security Council. He also noted that invitations for the summit scheduled for September have already been sent out.
India has been holding the presidency of the G20 since December 1, 2022. All leaders of the group, as well as those from nine other countries including Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates, are invited to the summit. Earlier, a spokesperson for the Indian Foreign Ministry, Arindam Bagchi, said that New Delhi hopes for the participation of leaders from all associated countries.
