First Hijab-Wearing Footballer Plays in World Cup Match
Moroccan national team player Nouhaïla Benzina has made history as the first woman to play in a World Cup match while wearing a hijab. The information was reported by RIA Novosti, citing The Athletic.
Today, Morocco's team secured a victory against South Korea (1:0) in the group stage of the World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand. Benzina, who remained on the bench during the first match against Germany (0:6), took to the field as a starter with her head covered.
The International Federation of Football (FIFA) lifted the ban on wearing hijabs in 2014, a restriction that had been in place since 2007.
