What is Hindering Negotiations with Azerbaijan
The Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, has stated that he believes in the possibility of achieving sustainable peace with Azerbaijan. “If I did not believe at all, it would make no sense to participate in the negotiation process. But believing does not mean that I guarantee we will reach a result,” he said in an interview with the France-Presse agency in response to a question.
According to him, the outcome depends not only on him. “Because it does not only depend on me, it naturally depends on the positions of the President of Azerbaijan as well. Not to mention, we are not negotiating in a vacuum. There is also an international situation, a geopolitical situation, a humanitarian situation, various human factors that can emerge. The political situation, the domestic political situation,” he said.
Pashinyan also highlighted the most significant barrier to negotiations: “The most important thing that, in my opinion, hinders the progress of negotiations is Azerbaijan's continuous aggressive rhetoric, the hate speech towards Armenians and everything Armenian, the acts of hatred. And of course, the politics of revenge against the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh and the people.”
