US Issues New Security Alert for Its Citizens in Armenia

The United States Embassy in Armenia has issued another security alert for its citizens in the country, urging them to exercise caution when visiting certain border areas in Armenia.

In a message specifically intended for American citizens, it states: “Due to the ongoing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan reminds American citizens that U.S. embassy personnel and their families are prohibited from nonessential travel to the following areas, which reflects a slight easing since restrictions were implemented in September 2022.”

The locations mentioned in the embassy's message include: east of the village of Varagavan in Tavush Province along the H37 highway, east of the village of Navour in Tavush Province along the H36 highway, eastern areas of Gegharkunik Province, and travel through the village of Yeraskh in Ararat Province is permitted with no stops. Travel to Jermuk, along the H42 and H43 highways near Vayots Dzor Province, remains limited. Travel to Artsakh continues to be prohibited.

The embassy urges its citizens to remain cautious when approaching all international borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan and to avoid traveling near conflict zones and the line of contact in Artsakh. “The U.S. government cannot provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Artsakh and its surroundings, as access is prohibited,” the alert states.

The U.S. diplomatic mission advises: Register for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates, follow local news for updates, avoid crowded places, refrain from demonstrations, inform friends and family about your safety, be aware of your surroundings, and exercise caution when walking or driving at night.
