No Guarantee That Azerbaijan Will Not Violate Possible Agreements with Armenia, Says MEP

The issue of free movement through the Lachin corridor is cemented in a document, but it is currently effectively blocked. This was stated by Member of the European Parliament Karen Melchior during the discussion titled 'Armenia and Azerbaijan Relations and the Situation in Nagorno-Karabakh and the Lachin Corridor' at the ongoing plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, as reported by 1lurer.am.

According to her, an international monitoring mission is necessary to determine how to ensure access to the corridor.

Referring to a possible peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the MEP noted that previously signed documents have been violated, and there is no guarantee that Azerbaijan will not violate new ones.

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, responded to the MEP's speech, stating that sometimes it is not possible to ensure the implementation of agreements, and the situation enters a deadlock. Borrell called for optimism, as even partial implementation of the documents has been able to prevent another outbreak of armed conflict in the region.

In response, the MEP addressed the issue of prisoners of war, asking what steps are being taken to ensure their return. Borrell answered that such problems can only be solved through continuous negotiations.
