Yerevan Deems Baku's Statements on Armenia's Metallurgical Plant Baseless
The Ministry of Environment of Armenia has deemed the statements from Baku regarding the environmental impact of the metallurgical plant being built in Armenia as baseless. The agency emphasized that the plant will be constructed in compliance with environmental standards and requirements outlined in domestic legislation.
“Azerbaijan's assertion that the operation of the station will have a cross-border negative impact on the environment is unfounded and does not correspond to reality. The only real purpose of these false environmental alarms is to obstruct the economic development of the Republic of Armenia. The Republic of Armenia is committed to fulfilling all international obligations undertaken in the field of environmental protection,” states the ministry's message.
On June 3, the Minister of Economy Vahan Kerobyan stated that a large Armenian-American metallurgical plant is being built in Yeraskh, Ararat Province of Armenia. According to him, the production area of 16,500 square meters will produce 180,000 tons of product annually.
On June 8, Azerbaijani media reported that local “environmental NGOs” had issued a joint statement to environmentalists in the US and Armenia, protesting against the construction of the plant.
