Biden and Speaker of the House Fail to Reach Agreement on National Debt

Negotiations on the debt ceiling have been effective with President Joe Biden, but an agreement has yet to be reached, said House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

“The tone today was better than at any other time we have had discussions,” McCarthy told reporters after the meeting.

According to him, he and Biden had an “effective discussion.” McCarthy also stated that he will “never” propose raising the federal debt ceiling to the House and that, in his view, it is time for lawmakers to “change the direction of federal spending.”

US President Biden also called his latest meeting with McCarthy “productive.” “I just finished a productive meeting with Speaker McCarthy regarding the need to avert default and prevent disaster for our economy,” Biden said in a statement released by the White House.

According to him, they agreed that “default is off the table.” “Despite disagreements, the Speaker and I (...) will continue to discuss ways to move forward,” Biden said.

Before the meeting, the President expressed optimism, stating, “I am hopeful that we will make certain progress.” “We will reach an agreement on the budget, and America will not default,” he added, emphasizing that “there is no alternative.”
