Kremlin Reminds of Putin's Warm Relations with Heydar Aliyev
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed high regard for the political wisdom and viewpoint of former Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated to NEWS.ru. According to him, the Russian leader maintained warm relations with Aliyev, whose 100th anniversary is being marked today. “President Putin had very warm relations with Heydar Aliyev. He truly respected Aliyev a lot. They communicated many times. It was during that time that a solid foundation for current Russian-Azerbaijani bilateral relations was laid. The President continues those same relations with Ilham Heydarovich. What we have now is just the continuation of that foundation,” Peskov noted.
Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin told Izvestiya that thanks to Putin's efforts, it has been possible to halt the acute phase of the conflict between Baku and Yerevan. He emphasized that the main principles of resolution were formulated and implemented solely through Russia's mediation mission.
According to Galuzin, throughout the conflict, Russia has made specific practical efforts to unblock transport and economic ties in the region, demarcate borders between the countries, establish connections through public and parliamentary channels, as well as negotiate a peace treaty.
