A Roadmap Will Be Prepared: Lavrov at the Meeting of Foreign Ministers of Russia, Iran, Turkey, and Syria
Moscow has proposed to prepare a roadmap for the normalization of relations between Damascus and Ankara at the next meeting of foreign ministers within the framework of the Russia-Iran-Turkey-Syria quadrilateral format. This was reported by Sputnik Armenia, referencing RIA Novosti.
“The optimal outcome of our interaction today could be an agreement to task experts to prepare a draft roadmap for Turkish-Syrian normalization for the next ministerial meeting, which will then be presented to the leaders of our states,” said Lavrov at the opening of the meeting with the foreign ministers of Syria, Turkey, and Iran in Moscow.
The Russian minister noted that the document contains several principles that protect all participants in the quadrilateral format. “I mean, first of all, the unwavering commitment of all countries involved in the meeting to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence, and unity of each other, as well as to the goals and principles of the UN Charter,” Lavrov explained.
According to the head of the Russian foreign affairs agency, the start of the Turkish-Syrian normalization process has a positive impact on the situation in the region. “The initiation of the Turkish-Syrian normalization process, in which all three guarantor countries of the Astana format that have proven their effectiveness are participating, has a significant positive effect not only on the situation around Syria but also on the overall atmosphere in the Middle East,” Lavrov stated.
He emphasized the importance of the quadrilateral meeting, adding that the countries have consistently pursued this outcome. It is worth noting that today the meeting of the foreign ministers of Russia, Syria, Turkey, and Iran has commenced in Moscow.
