"Our Future is Black Like This Water": Activists Pour Black Liquid into Rome’s Four Rivers Fountain

A group of "climate change activists" has poured a "coal-based black liquid" into the famous Four Rivers Fountain (Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi) in Rome to "sound the alarm about the bleak future awaiting humanity," CNN reports.

"Our future is as black as this water," said the group named Ultima Generazione (Last Generation) on their website, claiming responsibility for the vandalistic act.

"Without water, there is no life, and due to rising temperatures, we are subject to drought on one side and floods on the other," they added. "Difficult years lie ahead, but if we do not achieve zero emissions immediately, they will be dreadful."

Members of the group have been arrested and charged with defacing a public monument. The Four Rivers Fountain, located in Rome's famous Piazza Navona, was designed by the Italian sculptor Lorenzo Bernini in 1651.

Italy's Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano condemned the activists' protest action and stated that those responsible must "pay out of their own pockets."
