Two-Day Strike Begins at German Airports

A two-day warning strike by security personnel has begun at Hamburg, Düsseldorf, and Cologne/Bonn airports. On Thursday, April 20, 121 out of 204 flights at Cologne/Bonn airport were canceled, affecting approximately 28,000 passengers.

Düsseldorf airport has also reported mass cancellations and longer waiting times. The management of Hamburg Airport has canceled all flights on April 20 and 21, as well as nearly one-third of incoming flights, impacting around 80,000 travelers.

On April 21, security personnel at Stuttgart Airport, as well as railway workers, will join the strike initiated by the Ver.di union. The EVG railway union has called for a warning strike from 3:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

Ver.di demands additional compensation for airport workers who work during night hours, weekends, and holidays, as well as an increase in overtime pay. On April 11 and 12, tariff negotiations failed to reach an agreement, with the next round scheduled for April 27-28.

EVG advocates for a 12% pay raise for German railway workers, but not less than €650 per month.
