The Armenian Church in Sudan is 2 km Away from the Military Theater, Media Reports

Military operations underway in Sudan have not caused any damage to the local Armenian community or the Armenian Apostolic St. Gregory the Illuminator Church located in the capital, Khartoum. This was reported to Sputnik Armenia by His Grace Bishop Ashot Mnatsakanyan, the leader of the Armenian Diocese of Egypt (covering Ethiopia, Sudan, and South Africa).

The bishop clarified that military actions are mainly occurring in the vicinity of Khartoum International Airport, which is almost 2 km away from the Armenian church. “According to our information, there has been shelling in the airport area throughout the night, and the sounds have continued to be heard until now. Fortunately, the military actions have not reached the city, and the church has not been damaged. However, if events develop in such a way that they invade the city, it would no longer be just a matter for the Armenian church, but a problem for the entire city. We hope it doesn’t come to that,” the bishop stated.

Bishop Ashot Mnatsakanyan also informed that the Armenian community is currently safe, much like the rest of the capital’s residents. “But, if any security issues arise, we will certainly need to organize assistance through our leadership in Cairo and national authorities to provide first aid or any other support to our community members,” he added.

According to the bishop, the Armenian community is not large. Previously, there were about 1,500 members, but now only around 15-20 Armenians reside in the country. There are also those who have moved from Lebanon and Syria, as well as temporary workers from Armenia and other countries.
