US to Compensate Iran for Illegal Freezing of Assets, International Court Rules
The International Court of Justice has ruled that the US illegal blocking of a portion of Iran's assets is unlawful and has obligated Washington to compensate Tehran. This was reported by TASS.
As noted by the court's vice president, Kirill Gevorgyan, Washington violated its commitments under the Treaty of Amity, Economic Relations, and Consular Rights between Iran and the United States.
"The US is obliged to compensate Iran for the repercussions and violations of international obligations," Gevorgyan stated.
In 2016, the US Supreme Court had rejected a claim by Iran's central bank to recover $2 billion, ruling that those funds were earmarked for victims of terrorist attacks allegedly involving Tehran.
