Will Hrachya Sargsyan Resign? What the City Hall Says

Yesterday, the media reported that today the Mayor of Yerevan, Hrachya Sargsyan, would announce his resignation. According to Irakanum, he is expected to make the announcement in the second half of the day. Hrachya Sargsyan will inform about his resignation before 15:00.

The news outlet states that the reason for the mayor's resignation is that a dual authority has been created in the city hall for a long time, which has not pleased Sargsyan from the beginning. He has been a mere "figurehead" in the city hall, with Deputy Mayor Tigran Avinyan solving all the issues. Avinyan also participates in government meetings. Recently, when addressing the question of why he participates in government meetings instead of Hrachya Sargsyan, Avinyan's response put Sargsyan in an even worse situation.

“The mayor has not worked with a vice prime minister in the government and this very building for three years, and perhaps has a lesser understanding of the internal processes; we are just ensuring efficiency,” said Avinyan. This statement has finally pushed Hrachya Sargsyan over the edge, who was recently even given the role of reading announcement texts in the city hall, further putting him in an embarrassing position.

According to sources from the news outlet, tensions between Avinyan and Sargsyan have intensified recently, which has led Sargsyan to decide to resign. Of course, this does not mean that snap elections will take place in Yerevan. A political decision has not been made yet. The council will elect a new mayor.
