35 and 39-Story Buildings Being Constructed in Yerevan Despite Allowable Height Limit of 25 Stories

The former chairman of the State Committee of Cadastre, Sarhat Petrosyan, addressed the construction of 35 and 39-story skyscrapers in Yerevan in a Facebook post, sharing photographs.

“The images show advertisements for 35 and 39-story buildings being constructed in Yerevan, while another depicts an excerpt from construction norms in Armenia, stating the maximum allowable heights. For structural wall systems (which involve very costly solutions), the limit is 25 stories, and for column frame systems (which are predominantly used in construction), it is 20 stories.

There has been much discussion about the unprecedented and unthoughtful construction in Yerevan over the past 2-3 years, as well as in previous periods, but the scale of these developments and irresponsible behavior is increasingly making the situation more desperate, especially in light of the recent earthquake that claimed nearly 60,000 lives in Turkey and Syria.

Now, do you understand what we are doing? When it comes to earthquakes, we shouldn't predict the number of casualties; we should listen to experts and not make exceptions. We must stop this process as soon as possible. By the way, they recently sent something to the National Assembly for some discussions, where it is mentioned that there is no master plan, which is why the situation is like this. Gentlemen, you have been misled; the master plan will not save us, you, or anyone else,” Petrosyan wrote.
