18 Dead in Peru Due to Cyclone-Induced Floods

In Peru, 18 people have died as a result of flooding and heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Yaku, according to Agence France-Presse, citing the National Institute of Civil Defense. The agency reported that "the number of victims from natural disasters has reached 18 over the past week." According to government statistics, a total of 59 people have died this rainy season, which began several months ago, and more than 1,300 residential buildings have been destroyed.

Floods and landslides frequently pose a threat to the lives of Peruvians. For example, in February of this year, landslides in the southern region of Arequipa resulted in the deaths of 40 people, while the rainy season of 2017-2018 claimed the lives of more than 10 individuals and destroyed over 16,000 homes.
