Civil Contract Proposes Anna Hakobyan's Relative for Gyumri Deputy Mayor Position

“Civil Contract” faction will propose the candidacy of Vahagn Mkrtchyan, a member of the Gyumri City Council, for the position of Deputy Mayor of Gyumri. This was reported to Sputnik Armenia by Knarik Harutyunyan, the leader of the Civil Contract faction in the Gyumri municipality.

According to the media, the 28-year-old individual has no political background; it is known only that he is a dentist and a relative of Anna Hakobyan, the wife of the Prime Minister of Armenia. It is noteworthy that the other Deputy Mayor of Gyumri, Arthur Papikyan, is the cousin of Suren Papikyan.

As a reminder, the former Deputy Mayor of Gyumri, David Arushanyan, had suspended his powers since October 25, 2022, having replaced Vahagn Hovakimyan in the National Assembly. During this time, the Civil Contract had not voiced a candidate.

“We already have a candidate for Deputy Mayor. In the upcoming council session, the council will elect the Deputy Mayor upon the proposal of the community leader, by majority of votes,” Knarik Harutyunyan noted.

Referring to the case of Aghasi Matevosyan, a member of the Gyumri City Council from the Civil Contract party, Knarik Harutyunyan stated that the matter is regulated by municipal laws. “As long as there is no court decision, Aghasi Matevosyan's name will continue to remain in the Civil Contract list of the Gyumri City Council, as this decision is regulated by municipal laws,” the official emphasized.

On February 9, Aghasi Matevosyan and three others were detained for two months. They were charged under part 2 of article 252 of the Criminal Code of Armenia (robbery committed by a group of persons in conspiracy) and part 1 of article 456 (theft, extortion, destruction, damage, or concealment of documents, stamps, seals, or state registration plates of vehicles committed by a group of persons in conspiracy).

It should be noted that Aghasi Matevosyan is the nephew of the former Deputy Prime Minister Hambardzum Matevosyan.
