Why the Hague Court Did Not Set a Deadline in Its Decision on the Lachin Corridor: Kirakosyan Explains

The International Court of Justice's decision requiring Azerbaijan to ensure the free movement of people, vehicles, and cargo through the Lachin Corridor did not specify any deadlines, stated Armenia's representative on international legal issues, Yeghishe Kirakosyan, during a press conference today.

“This time, no deadlines were mentioned by the court. Essentially, the decision states that it is mandatory, and from the moment of acceptance, it is binding on the parties, that state against which such a measure has been applied. This means that the state must take immediate action,” he noted.

According to Kirakosyan, the absence of a deadline means that the decision should come into effect immediately.

He views it positively that following the Hague court's decision, many foreign ministries and the UN Secretary-General issued statements referencing the court's ruling. “I believe these are important developments that need to increase, and the pressure in this direction must be maximized. This is the only way forward; sadly, we have no other path,” emphasized Yeghishe Kirakosyan.

The representative on international legal issues for Armenia believes that both diplomatic means and political leverage should be consistently utilized to ensure compliance with the Hague court's decision.
