Azerbaijan Sues Armenia, Demands Compensation

Azerbaijan has initiated an interstate arbitration process against Armenia in accordance with the Energy Charter Treaty, as stated by the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is noted that the Azerbaijani side has demanded financial compensation from Armenia for the alleged violation of Azerbaijan’s sovereign rights over energy resources during what it describes as nearly 30 years of illegal occupation of Azerbaijani territories from 1991 to 2020.

The ministry claims that during this period, Armenia has allegedly built at least 37 hydropower plants in Azerbaijan’s sovereign territory without permission. The accusations from the Azerbaijani side pertain to the operation of facilities such as the Tartar Hydropower Plant, the Sarsang Reservoir, coal reserves, and other sites.
