What is Happening in Turkey's Armenian Neighborhoods: One Armenian Has Died
In Kahramanmaraş province of Turkey, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake has reportedly resulted in the death of one Armenian, with additional material losses. The Armenian newspaper 'Zhamanak' from Istanbul has provided data to Armenpress regarding casualties and losses in the Armenian-populated areas of Turkey following the devastating earthquake.
In Malatya, one person lost their life due to the collapse of an apartment belonging to an Armenian family. In Elazığ (Kharberd), buildings have been damaged, but members of the Armenian community are relieved that there have been no human casualties. In Diyarbakır, Ohannes Gafur Turkay, the head of the council for the St. Kireakos Armenian Church, reported that the church was not damaged by the shocks, but there are destroyed buildings in the city.
According to Father Avetis in Iskenderun, the city center has experienced destruction. The Latin Catholic church was completely destroyed, and the Church of the Forty Martyrs also suffered damage. There are no reports of human losses.
Currently, there are no concerning reports from the only Armenian village in Turkey, Vakıflı. Although tremors were felt in Kayseri, the local St. Grigor Lusavorich church remained undamaged.
We remind that the death toll from the earthquake in Turkey has now reached 284, with 2383 injured.
