The Term 'Mummy' Banned from Use at the World's Largest Museum
The term 'mummy' has been banned from use at the world's largest museum, the British Museum, as well as at the National Museum of Scotland. It is considered disrespectful to refer to the remains of ancient Egyptians in this way. The term diminishes human dignity and harkens back to colonial pasts, reports the Daily Mail.
As an alternative, the phrases 'mummified person' or 'mummified remains' are being proposed. This initiative aims to remind museum visitors that they are looking at the remains of once-living individuals.
