Nazarbayev Stripped of Privileges and Guarantees
The Constitutional Court of Kazakhstan has stripped Nursultan Nazarbayev of his title as Elbasy (Leader of the Nation). This is reported by Gоворит Москва.
The court has decided to invalidate the law on "The First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan - Elbasy," which designated Nazarbayev as the leader of the nation and granted him lifelong privileges and guarantees.
"Based on the will expressed by the people of Kazakhstan in the referendum on June 5, 2022, it is recognized that there are currently no legal grounds in the Constitution for the preservation of the constitutional law on 'The First President of the Republic'... consequently, it is subject to invalidation," reads the court's decision.
Nursultan Nazarbayev led Kazakhstan for nearly 30 years before resigning in March 2019. He was succeeded by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
