Our Goal is Clear: Carpenter on Peace Agreement Between Armenia and Azerbaijan
The U.S. Permanent Representative to the OSCE, Michael Carpenter, has stated that Washington is interested in a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This comment was made in response to a question regarding whether a meeting between the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan would take place, given that Baku refuses to engage in peace talks if French President Emmanuel Macron participates.
“As you know, the U.S. is actively involved in the process and is interested in a peace agreement. We will continue to look for ways to maintain communication between ministers and leaders. It is no secret that we are working closely with our partners in the European Union on this issue and are considering applying the OSCE framework. At the request of Armenia, the OSCE has already sent a needs assessment group to the Armenian side of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. The organization also supports EU efforts.”
“Our goal is clear: we want the border to be demarcated as soon as possible. We want a peace agreement to be reached between the two sides as soon as possible so that peace and stability can return to the region, people's rights and security can be ensured, and we can open a new chapter in the history of the South Caucasus. It is evident that achieving this goal will take some time, but we strive to do everything possible to ensure this outcome,” said the diplomat.
