French Senate Adopts Resolution Imposing Sanctions Against Azerbaijan

The French Senate has adopted a resolution imposing sanctions against Azerbaijan, with 295 members of the Senate’s lower chamber voting in favor and only 1 against.

The authors of the resolution are Bruno Retailleau, Patrick Kanner, Hervé Marseille, and Elian Assassi.

The document suggests considering the possibility of confiscating the assets of Azerbaijani leaders and imposing an embargo on gas and oil supplies. Furthermore, it demands Azerbaijan's immediate withdrawal from the occupied territories of Armenia.

The authors reference Article 34-1 of the French Constitution (adopted on June 26, 1945), the United Nations Charter, the North Atlantic Treaty of April 4, 1949, the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, which entered into force on January 4, 1969, the UN General Assembly Resolution 60/1 of September 16, 2005, as well as the trilateral statement of November 9, 2020.

Simultaneously, the Senate calls on the government to consider the establishment of a humanitarian office in Nagorno-Karabakh and to support Armenia in all possible ways, particularly in the field of defense.

The authors demand that the French government guarantees the safety of the Armenian population and Armenia within internationally recognized borders and propose the deployment of international forces in the region.

Senators affirm the necessity of recognizing the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, which could serve as a negotiating tool for establishing lasting peace.
