Construction of highway and railway through Meghri depends on Armenia's position, says Russian Deputy Prime Minister
This morning, Azerbaijan and Iran began the construction of bridges at the border, which will connect the roads of the two countries and ensure the shortest and most convenient movement between Azerbaijan's western regions and Nakhchivan, stated Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk.
He noted that the construction of railway and automobile roads passing through Meghri depends on Armenia's position. The Russian official also added that at the same time, the construction of a vehicle road through Iran, bypassing Armenia, will be ready next year.
"The opening of transport communication between Azerbaijan's western regions and Nakhchivan through Armenian or Iranian territory will play a special role in shaping the intersection of key international transport corridors North-South and East-West," said the Russian co-chairman of the trilateral commission on unblocking economic and transport links in the South Caucasus during a speech at the 'Made in Russia' conference organized in Moscow.
"It is in the South Caucasus that the intersection of the key international transport corridors 'North-South' and 'East-West' is being formed today. If it is created, the economies of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia will start to receive additional revenues associated with the advantages of their geographical location in Eurasia," said the Russian Deputy Prime Minister.
Official Yerevan has stated that it is ready to build new roads, subject to agreement with Azerbaijan and in accordance with Armenian legislation.
