Gegham Manukyan's Son Expelled from University
On Teacher's Day, I am compelled to write about a student, as today I received the order for the expulsion of Taron Manukyan, a student of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, a volunteer participant in the 44-day war, who is currently detained on criminal charges. This was announced by Ruben Melikonyan, the dean of YSU's Faculty of Oriental Studies.
“I would like to make some notes and clarifications on this matter. Taron Manukyan attended the courses but could not take the exams, as he had already been detained. Our position regarding this issue was clear, and I took the necessary steps. First, I sent the necessary literature to Taron, who was in pre-trial detention, and then, seeing that the measure of restraint was not changing and approaching the exam period, I reported to the rectorate and informed them that the faculty's lecturers and I personally were ready to conduct Taron's exams in the detention facility in the area designated for visits. I have the impression that a bureaucratic process began, and then bureaucratic disputes extended beyond YSU to the relevant ministries. My proposal to conduct the exams in the detention center was essentially rejected for various reasons. Given the arrangement of events, it was clear that Taron Manukyan would be expelled from the university. I assure you that Taron's knowledge allows him not just to aim for a satisfactory grade but for higher scores, and the main issue here was to create an opportunity for him to take the third-year exams and transfer to the fourth year, with the subsequent actions regarding his status as a student becoming clear during the trial process.
In any case, Taron will lose one academic year and will continue his studies later, but some have permanently lost their face and the remnants of conscience that may have still remained. By the way, as the dean, I refused to sign the expulsion order for Taron Manukyan, thereby once again expressing my disagreement.”
