Chinese Missiles Fall Into Japanese Territory; Tokyo Sends Protest Note
Japan's government has lodged a strong protest with China after five missiles fired by China landed in Japan's economic zone. This information was reported by RIA Novosti, citing the Japanese Kyodo news agency.
In connection with the incident, Deputy Foreign Minister Takeo Mori had a phone conversation with the Chinese ambassador to Japan, during which he demanded an immediate cessation of military exercises.
It is noted that today, China officially commenced extensive military drills around Taiwan. These exercises are a response to the visit of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei and will continue until Sunday.
The official relations between the Central Government of the People's Republic of China and its island province, Taiwan, were severed in 1949 after the forces defeated in the Chinese Civil War retreated to Taiwan. Practical and unofficial contacts between the island and mainland China resumed in the late 1980s, and since the early 1990s, both sides began to establish connections through non-governmental organizations.
