Zakharova Responds to White House Statement

The White House is persistently denying a recession in the United States, stating that they have decided to cancel the use of this term, said Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"The White House denies a recession in the U.S. They adamantly stand by their positions, clash with their own journalists, shake their heads, get frustrated, and refuse to answer clarifying questions about what 'decline' means in this context," she wrote on her Telegram channel.

“Do you know how economic depressions in the U.S. ended? They simply stopped using the word. Just like the term 'panic' in the context of an economic crisis. No word, no problem. Apparently, this time they have also decided to cancel the usage of the term recession," the Russian Foreign Ministry representative noted.

“Previously, American political equilibrists were saved by the phrases 'recession,' 'slowdown.'” Zakharova added.

Earlier, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had an altercation with a journalist over the definition of recession during a press briefing, attempting to mislead regarding the economic situation in the U.S. The U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis had released a statement indicating that the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) had decreased by 0.9% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2022. Thus, the U.S. economy has been in decline for six months.
