Trailer Found Abandoned on a Mexican Highway; Local Residents Help Migrants

Smugglers abandoned a trailer on one of Mexico's highways, containing around 400 individuals, and local residents came to their aid, reports Azteca TV, citing RIA Novosti.

"Smugglers left the trailer with about 400 migrants who were illegally transported through the southern state of Veracruz on the Acayucan-Sayula de Alemán highway," the broadcaster stated.

Rescued migrants from the steel container reported that they were running out of air, prompting them to start breaking the roof of the trailer. Local residents, hearing the noise, helped them escape.

According to media reports, a majority of the illegal migrants were escaping from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Venezuela, and Haiti.

Authorities and immigration service representatives who arrived at the scene provided assistance to 93 individuals, out of which 12 required hospitalization. Doctors informed journalists that some migrants were already in a state of unconsciousness due to dehydration, hypertension, and other complications. Among the injured, some sustained broken legs and arms after jumping from a height of four meters.

During the current fiscal year that began in October, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has encountered nearly 1.4 million illegal migrants at the border with Mexico.
