Boris Johnson May Become NATO's Next Secretary General
Senior members of the British Conservative Party are in favor of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson's candidacy for the position of Secretary General of NATO when the high office becomes vacant, reports The Telegraph.
Johnson is seen as a key candidate for the defense role, as NATO's current leader Jens Stoltenberg is expected to step down next September. Johnson is the latest British politician to be considered for the position, following Defense Secretary Ben Wallace as well as former Prime Ministers Theresa May and David Cameron.
The timing of taking on the role would give Johnson some time to recover his strength after he leaves the position of Prime Minister on September 6, according to the publication. To assume the office, he would have to resign from his position as a Member of Parliament.
Johnson has long been offered this position due to the US's distrust towards any EU figure, considering the numerous speculations about plans to create a new EU army. Britain is also trusted by the Baltic states, and Johnson has personally gained international prominence by assisting in forming a coalition against Vladimir Putin.
Conservative MP Richard Drax, a member of the defense committee, stated that he would support the Prime Minister if he wished to take on that role. “Any prominent Briton would be an excellent choice. If that is truly what Boris Johnson wants to do, I would, of course, support him,” he said to the publication.
