Surenyans Announces How Much Air Temperature Exceeds Climatic Norm
In Armenia, the impact of the high-temperature wave will persist until July 21 inclusively. This information was reported by Gagik Surenyans, the deputy head of the Armenian Hydro-Meteorological and Monitoring Center, during a press conference.
“There have been no precipitation in Armenia for a considerable time, accompanied by a high thermal background. The air temperature is 5-7 degrees higher than the climatic norm, especially in pre-mountain and valley areas, where there exists a very high level of fire hazard,” said Surenyans.
According to him, until July 21, temperatures in Yerevan and the Ararat Valley will fluctuate between 38-40 degrees, while in mountainous areas, it will reach up to 30-33 degrees.
“Due to the presence of the heat wave, the intensity of ultraviolet radiation is quite high compared to the norm. We advise the population to avoid direct sunlight from 11 AM to 5 PM,” he said.
Surenyans noted that such heatwaves have become a common phenomenon for the republic in the last decade. Statistics show that prior to the 2000s, 40-degree heat was observed on average once every five years. However, in the years 2000-2010, it began to occur almost every year, and after 2010, these heatwaves last not 1-2 days, but 5-7 days.
After July 22, the heat wave will gradually begin to retreat southward, giving way to relatively cooler air currents from the Black Sea. According to forecasts, air temperature will decrease by 4-5 degrees from July 22 to 25. Precipitation is not expected yet.
