Vladimir Putin Compensates for Damage from Western Sanctions: The Wall Street Journal

Russian President Vladimir Putin has compensated for the damage caused by Western sanctions by redirecting gas supplies to Asian markets, writes Gerald Sabens for The Wall Street Journal.

“Putin has several reasons to celebrate his plan. Economically, he is selling significant amounts of oil to India and exploring the possibility of selling natural gas to Pakistan,” the publication states.

Additionally, according to the author, the Russian president is achieving successes on the diplomatic front as well. The journalist reminds that 35 countries, including India, China, and South Africa, refused to condemn the special operation during a special session of the UN General Assembly in early March.

The journalist notes that against the backdrop of deteriorating relations between the East and West due to the situation created around Ukraine, Moscow is building a new network in the fields of diplomacy, economy, and security along the North-South axis. China is seen as Russia's key ally, engaging in trade and investments across Asia, Latin America, and Africa.
