Another Earthquake Hits Afghanistan, Casualties Reported
On June 24, five people lost their lives and more than ten were injured due to another series of underground tremors in eastern Afghanistan. This was reported to RIA Novosti by Sharafat Zaman, a representative of the Afghan Ministry of Health.
"Unfortunately, we have more bad news from Paktika province. An earthquake occurred there today at 10 AM in the Geyan district," said the agency's interlocutor, adding that "there have been more than five fatalities and over ten people have sustained injuries." According to data from the US Geological Survey (USGS), a 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border on June 24. The tremors were recorded at 01:43 UTC, and the epicenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Earlier, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 occurred on the night of June 22 in Afghanistan. Reports indicated severe devastation in the provinces of Paktika and Khost, which border Pakistan. The leader of the ruling Taliban movement, Haibatullah Akhundzada, has called on the international community and humanitarian organizations to provide assistance to Afghanistan following the earthquake. Local media have reported that the death toll has reached over 1,100, with more than 1,650 people injured.
